Football Games

Your online resource covering the best football games out there!

1978, all the free football games were crude, low resolution affairs, employing three man teams. Players looked short, squat and squarish. The following year brought teams of five men and the ability to use more complicated formations. Animations were still slow and with no computer intelligence, you had to have two players to play the game.

Game improvements came over time and the consoles began to lag behind developments for the actual computer games. Then in 1989, a football game was released that changed everything - John Madden Football. Thus began the Cadillac of all football video games.

Being released yearly meant that improvements had to be made every single year thus raising the bar for every other football game out there. They never had a chance.

One of the competitors released in 1990 was Joe Montana Football Games and for a time looked pretty good with commentary and other bells and whistles. The Montana game engine was even adapted for college ball. The next big improvement cam with the release of NFL Gameday in 1995. Licensed by the NFL with player stats, damn fine visuals and precise control of the action on the field. The PC was the dominant platform for the fast improving video football games.

In 2005, the field changed for video football games. Electronic Arts locked up long term licensing deals for NFL football, arena football, ESPN, and the NCAA football. Good bye everyone else. EA became the only place to get your video football game fix.

Except for one alternative. That alternative was published by Midway, call Blitz: The League. Not dependent on an NFL license, Blitz had all the mayhem and violence that went against the clean image the NFL wanted to present. And therein lies the appeal. Broke this, broken that and more was part of every game.

The next few years should continue to be challenging as deals wind down and possible new video football games hit the market. One thing for sure, when the pre-season rolls around, there will be new games on the shelf to spend your money on. Nowadays its possible to find many online football games.
